In 1871, the making of a town hall cellar was already being considered by the municipal council. In 1884, the council approved some basic regulations and the Wiener Rathauskeller in Vienna City Hall opened to the public in February 1899. It has since been the go-to location for events, gatherings, concerts and, most importantly, Austrian wine. The Rathauskeller has gone through extensive renovation over the years — 1925, 1952 and 2005 — but has retained its artistic characteristics and its individuality to date, even if the names of the rooms may have changed since then.

• The main responsibility for the creation of the Wiener Rathauskeller in Vienna City Hall was entrusted to architect Josef Urban and artist Heinrich Lefler.
  
• The interior of the Rathauskeller was decorated with frescos and other art pieces with support from many contemporary painters including Hugo Darnaut, Karl Friedrich Gsur, Hans Ranzoni, Max Suppantschitsch, Charles Wilda and others.
  
• This makes every element of the interior rooms — the rich carvings, silk wallpaper, gold-decorated panelling and mirrors — striking and unique.
  
• In 1964, the frescoes were touched up for maintenance, and the renewed art was revealed in 1965.

The Wiener Rathauskeller in Vienna City Hall is the host of the Austrian Dinner Show, and the famous New Year's Eve dinner party. It is also the occasional host of the annual Vienna Bluesball.

• Subway: The nearest subway station to the venue is the Volkstheater station, 11 minutes away on foot. Hop onto the subway line U3, which serves this station.
  
• Tram: The nearest tram stations to the hall are the Rathausplatz / Burgtheater stations. The 1, 2, D, 71, and U2Z lines serve these stations.
  
• Bus: Bus lines 13A, 48A, 59A, N25, and VAL 2 will get you to Wiener Rathauskeller in Vienna City Hall. Rathausplatz/Burgtheater and Auerspergstraße are the closest stations.
  
• Recommended Mode of Transport: The restaurant is centrally located and easily accessible by public transport. The subway is the easiest mode of transport, as the station is a few minutes away on foot.
  
• Parking: The area around the hall is a short-term parking zone till 10 pm. If you would like to stay longer, the nearest car park is the Rathauspark garage.

• Special Car Parking: The venue has one designated car park for guests with disabilities. 
  
• Elevator: The elevator is 150 cm wide and can accommodate a wheelchair. 
  
• Guide Dogs: Guide dogs are permitted at the venue provided they use a muzzle. 
  
• Accessible Washroom: The washroom is wheelchair accessible.

• Parking: Do ensure you park your car in the right spot, as it will be towed away otherwise. 
  
• Timings: The restaurant is closed on Sundays and public holidays may cause changes in timings. 
  
• Operating Hours: The weekday operating hours of the restaurant are between 11:30 AM - 3 PM; and 6 PM - 11 PM. Last food orders are taken at 10 PM. 
  
• Online Reservation: Online reservations are encouraged for groups of up to 10 people. For larger parties, do get in touch with the venue directly. 
  
• Special Menu: Do ask the waiters for the monthly specials menu, as the items are updated based on seasonal ingredients.
