Vienna City Hall

Vienna City Hall is a neo-Gothic landmark on the Ringstrasse and the seat of the Mayor of Vienna and the Vienna City Council.     For a direct drop-off, ask for “Rathaus, Friedrich-Schmidt-Platz.” Taxis and ride-hail vehicles typically stop on the Ring or a side street next to the facade, leaving a short 1-3 minute walk to the main square. This is a practical option for late-evening events at Rathausplatz or for visitors who want to minimize walking.

  • By car:

    If driving, use Friedrich-Schmidt-Platz 1, 1010 Wien for navigation. Vienna City Hall stands on the northern Ringstrasse between the Burgtheater and Vienna Parliament. Parking details dedicated to Rathaus are not verified in the research document; central Vienna generally relies on paid underground garages and short-term street parking zones, and on-street parking near the 1st district is limited and regulated.

  • By metro:

    Take Metro U2 to Rathaus, the closest rapid-transit stop for Vienna City Hall. From Stephansplatz, the research route is about 7-10 minutes by U1/U3 plus U2 via Karlsplatz/Schottentor; from Wien Hbf, about 15-20 minutes by U1 to Karlsplatz and U2 to Rathaus. Follow signs to Rathausplatz, then cross Friedrich-Schmidt-Platz; the City Hall facade is directly ahead.

  • By tram:

    Tram lines 1, D, and 71 stop at Rathausplatz/Burgtheater on the Ringstrasse. From Wien Hbf, the research notes tram D as a public transport option taking about 15-20 minutes to this stop. After getting off, cross the Ringstrasse toward the large park and continue straight through Rathauspark toward the clearly visible City Hall building.

  • By bus:

    Local bus line 13A and other local lines stop at Auerspergstraße / Rathaus. From the stop, walk along Auerspergstraße toward the Ringstrasse, cross into Rathauspark, and continue until you reach Rathausplatz and the front steps of Vienna City Hall. This stop is about 0.3-0.4 km away, making it a useful surface-level alternative to metro or tram.

  • By foot:

    Walking works well if you are already in central Vienna. From Stephansplatz, the route to Vienna City Hall is about 1.2 km and takes roughly 15 minutes. Walk via Graben and Kohlmarkt toward Hofburg, exit to the Ringstrasse, then follow the Ring northwest past the Burgtheater until you see City Hall on the left.
